Course Description: This class will focus on the book: Shifting the Balance and provide for opportunities to learn from current articles, podcasts and videos. This class will change the way you see your students as readers. Educators will walk away with concrete ways to make your reading instruction more effective.

Learning Outcomes: 

  • Explore and become familiar with how your brain works to read. 
  • Explore and become familiar with shifts you can make in reading instruction to reach your students effectively.
  • Build background knowledge about effective instructional strategies for teaching reading to all students. 
  • Learned strategies to turn struggling readers into effective readers.

Learning Experiences: 

Completion of all specified assignments is required for issuance of credit.

  • Computer with internet access
  • Personal Gmail account:  Not affiliated with K-12 school district. Not affiliated with Higher learning institution outside of Notre Dame College

  • Social Emotional Check In 
  • Assignment #1: Personal Introduction
  • Assignment #2:  Read book introduction & article
  • Assignment #3:  Read Chapter 1 & article 
  • Assignment #4: Video, read article and complete Google Slide Assignment

 

Module 2

  • Social Emotional Check In 
  • Assignment #5: Phonemic Awareness & Read Chapter 2
  • Assignment #6: Read Chapter 3 & answer questions 
  • Assignment #7: Exploring Phonics Tools and Complete Google Slide Presentation
  • Assignment #8: Read Chapter 4, Watch video and complete a summary

 

Module 3

  • Social Emotional Check In 
  • Assignment #9: Heart Words: Watch Videos and complete a lesson plan (basic)
  • Assignment #10: Read Chapter 5 & answer questions 
  • Assignment #11: Read Chapter 6 & create a flier
