Digital Photography Using Apps

Course Description: In 2020 and beyond, educators witnessed a new model for administering online virtual, home base, and or brick and motor school site education.  Educators are rapidly discovering the power of integrating smartphones, tablets and apps for learning that is integrated into the ongoing classroom curriculum.  With the use of many interactive photography editing curriculum apps, students become engaged, interested, motivated and eager to learn.  Participants will discover the power of projected-based learning by developing digital photography Google websites, creative digital videos, editing , mixing and creating a memorable project by accessing student’s everyday smartphones and tablets.  In this course, participants will develop grade-specific (K-12) project-based lessons and come away with an energized “go-to” curriculum.

Learning Outcomes: 

  • To download iOS apps and Android/Google (application) onto smartphones and tablets from various web sites. 
  • Accessed smartphone camera mode and photography roll.
  • Developed a strong working knowledge of the navigation techniques for the camera, photo storage and uploading photos to an app.
  • Thoroughly perused the smartphone tutorials for the camera option.
  • Explored several website, articles, blogs and sites offering examples of photo editing
  • Developed curriculum for digital photography in the classroom
  • Discussed the integration of photography apps and tools for classroom use.

Required Text: Download Apps for:

  • Chromebook
  • Smart Phones ( Apple /Android) 

 

Assignment #1:  INTRODUCTION

  • Using the Google Doc provided, introduce yourself:
    • Discuss why you choose this course?
    • What is your background?
    • Describe your previous experience , if any with photography using a smartphone, tablet or any photo apps.
    • Describe your classroom or home base setting , what age or grade, and finally for what you would like to integrate and develop your lessons and unit plan. 
    • Create a Google Drive Folder entitled : Digital Photography Using Apps 26 share the folder with instructor: sreevesids@gmail.com 

 

IOS Photography

Objective: 

  • Use portrait mode to communicate emotion or a story
  • Understand how natural lighting changes photography
  • Transform one image into multiple moods using editing tools.
  • Experiment with angles and composition techniques

Assignments #1: Portrait Mode Storytelling

Instructions: Use portrait mode on your iphone or ipad to take 3-5 photos that each show a different emotion (examples: happiness, sadness, excitement, calm). Experiment with different lighting effects. 

Requirements : 

  • Use portrait mode for all photos
  • Show at least 3 different emotions 
  • Use at least 2 different lighting effects

Steps:

  1. Open Camera-select Portrait Mode
  2. Take your photos
  3. Edit depth or lighting if needed in the photos app
  4. Upload your best 3-5 images to your Google Drive Folder titling this assignment #1

Reflection (answer in the Google Doc provided in Google Classroom):

  • How did lighting and blur affect your photos?

Assignment #2: Natural Light Exploration

Instructions: Take photos of the same subject/location at two different times: 

  • Golden hour (sunrise/sunset)
  • Midday

Requirements: 

  • Minimum 2 photos (same subject)
  • Clearly show lighting differences 

Steps: 

  1. Take a photo during midday
  2. Take the same photo during golden hour
  3. Adjust exposure if needed.
  4. Upload both photos in Google Drive folder title:  Assignment #2

Reflection:(Answer in Google Doc inside Google Classroom)

  • Which lighting looks better and why?

Assignment #3:Editing for Mood 

Instructions: Take one original photo and edit it into 3 different styles using the editing tools in your Apple Device.

Required Edits: 

  • Bright & vibrant
  • Dark & dramatic
  • Black & White

Steps: 

  1. Take one photo
  2. Open it in the Photos app
  3. Duplicate it twice
  4. Edit each version differently
  5. Upload original + 3 edited versions ( 4 total images) in Google Drive Folder titled: Assignment #4

Reflection: (Answer the question in Google Doc provided inside Google Classroom)

  • How did editing change the feeling of the photo?

Assignment #4: Perspective & Composition 

Instructions: Take 5 photos each using a different composition technique. 

Required Shots:

  • Bird’s Eye View
  • Worm’s Eye View
  • Rule of thirds
  • Leading Lines
  • Frame within a frame

Steps: 

  1. Turn on Grid (Settings-Camera)
  2. Take each required shot
  3. Choose your best version of each
  4. Upload  5 labeled photos into your Google Drive Folder titled: Assignment #4

Reflection: (use the Google Doc provided in Google Classroom):

  • Which angle or composition worked best and why?

Android Photography

Objective: 

  • Learn how to control focus and brightness using your Android camera.
  • Use composition techniques to improve photo quality 
  • Explore how lighting impacts photography
  • Experiment with angles and viewpoints

Assignment #5: Android Photography: Focus & Exposure

Instructions: In this assignment you will learn how to control focus and exposure using your Android camera. 

Steps: 

  1. Open your camera app on your Android device.
  2. Tap different areas on the screen to change the focus.
  3. Adjust the brightness using the exposure slider (sun icon).
  4. Take 3 photos of the same subject: 
    1. One properly exposed
    2. One overexposed (too bright)
    3. One underexposed (too dark) 
  5. Upload all 3 photos to Google Drive titled: Assignment #5

Reflection: using the Google Doc inside Google Classroom respond the following question:

  • Explain exposure affected each image. 

Points: 20 

Assignment #6: Android Photography: Rule of Thirds

Instructions: This assignment focuses on improving your photo composition.

  1. Turn on the grid feature in your camera settings.
  2. Take 5 photos using the rule of thirds.
    1. Place your subject along the grid lines or intersections.
  3. Use a variety of subjects (people, objects, nature, etc.)
  4. Upload 5 photos to your Google Drive folder titled: assignment #6 

Reflection: Respond to the following prompt using the Google Doc inside Google Classroom:

  • Explain how you used the rule of thirds in at least 2 photos. 

Points: 20 

Assignment #7: Android Photography: Low Light

Instructions: Explore how lighting affects photography by taking photos in low light conditions. 

  1. Take photos indoors or outside in low light.
  2. Use Night Mode if your camera has it.
  3. Take at least:
    1. 1 photo without Night Mode
    2. 2 photos using Night Mode or steady hands
  4. Upload 3 photos to Google Drive Folder titled: Assignment #7 
  5. Using the Google Doc provided in Google Classroom respond to the following prompt: compare your results. 

Points: 20

Assignment #8: Android Photography: Creative Perspectives 

Instructions: Practice taking photos from different angles to create unique images.

  1. Choose one subject.
  2. Take 4 photos from different perspectives: 
    1. Bird’s-eye view (from above)
    2. Worm’s-eye view (from below)
    3. Eye Level
    4. Close Up
  3. Upload 4 labeled photos in Google Drive Folder titled: Assignment #8
  4. Respond to the following prompt using the Google Doc inside Google Classroom:
    1. Explain which angle is most effective and why

Points: 20

iPad Photography:

Objectives: 

  • Explore how lighting affects photos
  • Use composition techniques effectively
  • Use color to create a theme
  • Experiment with creative viewpoints

Tips: 

  • Clean your camera lens before shooting
  • Use natural light when possible 
  • Take multiple shots and choose the best ones
  • Be creative and have fun!

Assignment #9: Light & Shadow Study

Instructions: 

  1. Take photos of the same subject in different lighting conditions.
  2. Include at least 3 photos (different times of day or lighting sources)
  3. Upload 3 photos to Google Drive titled Assignment #9
  4. Respond to the following prompt using the Google Doc inside Google Classroom:
    1. Explain how lighting changed each image. 

Points: 20 

Assignment #10: Composition Practice

Instructions: 

  1. Turn on the grid feature on your iPad.
  2. Take at least 5 photos using:
    1. Rule of thirds
    2. Framing 
    3. Leading Lines
  3. Upload 5 photos to Google Drive titled: Assignment #10. Label each photo with the technique used. 

Points: 20 

Assignment #11: Color Story Project

Instructions: 

  1. Choose 1 main color
  2. Take 5-8 photos where that color stands out.
  3. Think about mood and consistency.
  4. Upload 5-8 of the photos to Google Drive titled: Assignment #11. 
  5. Respond to the prompt using the Google Doc inside Google Classroom: Explain your color theme.

Points: 20 

Assignment #12: Perspective & Angles

Instructions: 

  1. Photograph the same subject from different angles.
  2. Include at least:
    1. Low angle
    2. High angle
    3. Close up
    4. Wide shot
  3. Upload 4-5 photos to Google Drive Folder titled: Assignment #12.
  4. Respond to the prompt using the Google Doc provided in Google Classroom: 
    1. Describe how perspective changes the image.
